Why Brad Michaelson

The screensaver on every desktop and laptop I’ve ever owned has at one time had a scrolling, flipping or rotating text line that reads simply: “Ask why.”  I firmly believe that if everyone took ten seconds to ask and answer this question before doing almost anything, this world would be a better place.  Newton’s Third Law of Motion, the one that states, “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction,” means that that in every interaction, there is a pair of forces acting on the two interacting objects. The size of the forces on the first object equals the size of the force on the second object.  So a person’s decision to act, or not, has equal and opposite consequences.  Some decisions are good and others – not so much.

What’s in it for you?

So before spending any time on this site I recognize your need to know what’s in it for you.

The short answer is: insight, whimsy and perspective.  I subscribe to thirty magazines, follow hundreds Websites, bloggers and writers.  I consume media and follow trends because I’m paid to do the same for our clients.  My job requires that I see what’s coming before it gets here.  I love it.  But I know too that not everyone else does.  And I get it if this isn’t your thing.  But there are 73 million “Baby Boomers” just like me out there (well, sort of like me).  I can’t believe all of them are counting the minutes until they can hand in their bathroom key, grab the gold watch and head for some banana republic with their five-hundred large to ride out the next thirty or so years.  I believe that there are still a lot of us that want to leave a better planet behind us.  People who want to tidy up the mess that we’ve helped create.  Come on, take a look at this place; we can do a little better don’t you think?

A Better Place and a Laugh Along the Way

I’m not talking radical or revolutionary stuff here.  Just basic common sense things, the stuff you learned as a kid but convinced yourself didn’t apply once you grew up.  Ooops – turned out that a lot of that stuff mattered.  But my goal isn’t to hit you over the head with it.  We’ve created the technology that can lead us to a much better world.  And we can all have fun here.  The stuff we do is humorous, the things we want to do are still noble; we deserve a good life still.  But not at the expense of those who are coming up behind us.

But maybe I’m wrong about that. I’ve always been the one sticking daisies in rifles.  I created a great product and started an excellent business with my brother which eventually blew up because he grew up watching “Dallas” while I was raised on “Welcome Back Kotter”.  I just never cultivated that inner drive and strong sense of self (“centeredness”).  Loved his killer instinct and probably would have had a much bigger pile of cash at this point but I just couldn’t get there.

So my goal, my “Why”, is to get us all to stop taking ourselves and all of this “stuff” so fucking serious.  And then to fix it.  Let’s roll in the irony, celebrate the lunacy and laugh at the arrogance and hubris.  I am – we all are still works-in-progress.  We’re far from perfect and in that there is comfort and consolation.  Join me in taking a hard look at where we are today and where we can be tomorrow.  It’s going to be a riot.
